Job purpose

Assist in the educational and social development of pupils under the direction and guidance of the SENCO, class teacher, key stage leader, or vice principal.

General responsibilities: All Yasmina British Academy staff

  • Assist academy in achieving its overall vision and strategic intentions and to contribute to the achievement of relevant targets as set out in the academy's improvement plan and self-evaluation form.
  • Comply with regulations pertaining to health and safety at work legislation and adhere to academy policies relating to safe working practice and equal opportunities regulations.
  • Comply with the academy's performance management policy ensuring challenging annual targets are set and to fulfil the role of performance management reviewer if directed to do so by the principal.
  • Engage in annual training linked to child protection, safeguarding and health and safety together with all training deemed appropriate for the purpose of academy improvement or performance management.
  • Comply with the academy's staff dress code at all times including the wearing of photo ID or lanyard.
  • Comply with the academy's computer acceptable use policy (AUP) at all times.
  • Attend all staff briefings.
  • Sign out and sign in at relevant academy reception if off site at any point during the normal working day.

Main duties

  • Provide support for individual pupils or groups of pupils inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in a range of activities during the school day and to provide for their social, emotional and physical well-being.
  • Be pro-active in matters relating to health and safety.
  • Assist in the implementation of individual education programmes for individual pupils or groups of pupils and help monitor their progress.
  • Support pupils with additional support needs, e.g. emotional and behavioural difficulties and help to develop their social skills.
  • Assist class teachers with maintaining pupil records.
  • Prepare and present displays of pupils' work.
  • Support class teachers in photocopying and other tasks in order to support teaching.
  • Support the aims of the school; comply with the requirements of health and safety, other relevant legislation and school policies.
  • Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
  • Attend team and staff meetings as required.
  • Work with other professionals, e.g. speech therapists, occupational therapists etc. as necessary.
  • Undertake other duties from time to time as the principal requires.

Specific duties

  • Academic assistance.
  • Giving group instruction as prescribed by the teacher or providing individual instruction.
  • Demonstrating various instructional activities.
  • Monitoring work assigned by teacher - checking and correcting pupils' work while in progress.
  • Keeping pupils on task.
  • Praising and reinforcing achievements of pupils, reporting pupil progress to teacher.
  • Reorganising materials at the end of the day.
  • Checking attendance.
  • Supervising pupils in the classrooms and other locations.
  • Participating in development of behaviour policy, promoting pupils' self-esteem.
  • Disciplining misbehaviour in line with the whole school policy.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications:

  • To have a minimum secondary school certificate.

Minimum experience:

  • At least two years' experience in school field.
  • Preferable experience in the Islamic department.

Job specific knowledge & skills:

  • Previous experience working with students whose first language is English.
  • Passion for teaching and commitment to educating the whole child.
  • A high level of professionalism and consideration of the well-being of children.
  • Recent and consistent involvement in extra-curricular activities.
  • Respect for all members of a school community, irrespective of position, gender, age and ethnic background.
  • A positive and solution-focused attitude to working life.
  • A clean enhanced disclosure and barring services check or police check.
