Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

General responsibilities:

• Provides clinical leadership and accountability for the development and delivery of ED model of care.
• Manages and provides direct patient care, medical direction and advice within the Emergency Department.
• Administratively responsible for the emergency department.
• Provides training, CME opportunities and clinical guidance to medical staff in the Emergency Department.
• Supervises the strategic plan implementation in the Emergency Department.

Specific responsibilities:

• Provides clinical leadership and oversight in collaboration with the ED Nurse Manager of all clinical activities of the department;
• Has overall responsibility of theICML team at the ED and has a reporting responsibility to the ICML Project Manager and ICML management;
• Coordinates with the Hospital Administration on all administrative activities of the department;
• Coordinates with the Hospital clinical teams on all clinical activities of the department;
• Coordinates with the Project Manager on all matters related to the project, its performance, the relationship with the Hospital Administration and the Ministry of Health;
• Active leadership and participation in committees within the Emergency Department and the hospital generally;
• Recommends clinical privileges for each member of the department based on clinical experience and competence;
• Leads, coordinates and integrates services interdepartmentally;
• Develops policies and procedures that guide the provision of clinical services;
• Determines the qualifications and assesses the competency of physicians of the department;
• Provides ongoing assessment and improvement of the department’s performance;
• Develops and maintains appropriate quality control programs for the department;
• Provides orientation, in-service education, and continuing education of all physicians in the department;

• Leads and advocates on the interdisciplinary approach to care delivery and the development of integrated care pathways;
• Promotes research within the department and the hospital;
• Overall leadership responsibility for the delivery of clinical care to all patients under his/her care in the Emergency Department;
• Ensures a coordinated response to all Code Blue calls in the Emergency Department;
• Acts as a triage coordinator in multi-person/disaster cases or as per designated role within the defined disaster plan of the hospital;
• Provides clinical leadership, guidance, direction and coordination of activities for supportive care within the ED and for follow-up care;
• Leads, promotes and participates in ongoing education and training of all medical staff in the ED including the participation in hospital symposia and specialist meetings;
• Participates in department in-services, attends staff meetings and is a member of the Medical Executive Committee;
• Regularly reports, as required, on the KPIs that are to be reported upon regarding the activities in the ED;
• Liaises with the ICML management offices locally and internationally on matters of the project and the ICML Staff;
• Ensures the ICML Project Manager is informed of and aware of significant events and activities in the area(s) of responsibility;
• Ensures ICML is informed of and aware of significant events and activities in the area(s) of responsibility and ensure collection and compilation of all documentations, intellectual property and other relevant information about ICML activities within the ED and other relevant activities in the ED as may be required by ICML;
• Has a duty of care to ICML and works with and cooperates fully with ICML and the ICML Project Manager in the implementation of all aspects of the Agreement between the Ministry of Health and ICML;
• Produces monthly reports to the Project Manager and to ICML on the activities of the ED with particular emphasis on the activities of the ICML Staff at the ED for the preceding month highlighting areas of success, areas of deficiency and forecasting possible future encumbrances including laying out the steps for overcoming the same with the aim of providing safe and efficient healthcare services;
• Performs other professional duties as may be assigned within his/her scope and ability.

Requirements

Education:

• Medical Doctor degree or recognized equivalent
• Post-Graduate qualification in Emergency Medicine
• Active membership in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Emergency Medicine, or The College of Family Physicians of Canada, CCFP(EM) or equivalent
• Active Registration to Practice Medicine within specialty from country of origin or country of last practice
• Current ACLS and ATLS certification.

Experience:

• Minimum seven (7) years’ experience in an active treatment hospital within his/her specialty.
• Management experience within the Emergency Department and or in a designated Trauma Centre.
• Academic and teaching experience; research and publications.
• Instructor level BCLS/ACLS is desirable.

• Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
