Job description

GEMS Cambridge International School, Abu Dhabi is hiring for an experienced English teacher to join our school for a January 2026 start. The ideal candidate will have expertise in teaching English across A-level classes. You will inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a global perspective through engaging lessons and creative approaches to learning. A commitment to student development, collaboration, and high academic standards is essential.

Overall function and purpose:

To teach and educate students according to guidelines provided by the National Curriculum Framework under the overall guidance of the competent education authority.

Teach and assess assigned students according to their educational needs and deliver the relevant curriculum, ensuring that each student achieves academic success. Contribute to the wider school community.

Main responsibilities:

  • Deliver the required curriculum; demonstrating accurate and up to date knowledge of curriculum and subject matter.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, clutter-free, conducive environment that optimizes great student outcomes.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons to all students in the class according to their varying abilities.
  • Teach according to the educational needs, abilities, and achievement of the individual students and groups of students.
  • Adopt and work towards the implementation of the school development plan.
  • Assign work, correct, and mark work carried out by students. Mark according to the school's marking policy.
  • Set the highest expectations for every child in the class and assist learners to realize their potential, enabling them to work in a manner that shows high standards in their workbooks.
  • Assess, record, and report on the development, progress, attainment, and behavior of students.
  • Analyze data and use it to adapt classroom practice to ensure all learners achieve their full potential.
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports, and references relating to individual students or groups of students.
  • Participate in arrangements within an agreed national framework for the appraisal of students' performance.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual students, groups of students, or classes entrusted to you.
  • Provide guidance and advice to students on educational and social matters and on their further education and targets.
  • Communicate, consult, and cooperate with other members of the school staff, including those with posts of special responsibility and parents or guardians.
  • Review and evaluate your own teaching and learning strategies, methodologies, and programmes in line with the National Curriculum Framework guidelines to improve teaching and learning in the classroom.
  • Advise and cooperate with the Head of School, Deputy Heads, Assistant Head Teachers, Heads of Years, Education Officers, and other teachers in the preparation and development of curriculum design, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment, and pastoral care arrangements.
  • Ensure high standards of professional practice and quality of teaching and learning of the subjects through effective dialogue and participation in reciprocal peer review and observation of class teaching practice by the Head of Department.
  • Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities and take part in action research exercises.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among students under your care and safeguard their health and safety at all times.
  • Report all concerns that jeopardize the safety of learners, whether emotional or physical, to the safeguarding officer of the school.
  • Participate in staff, group, or other meetings related to the school curriculum or pastoral care arrangements for better organization and administration of the school.
  • Contribute to the professional development of new teachers and student teachers according to arrangements agreed with the Head of School.
  • Provide the necessary information and advice to designated personnel in the school regarding requisitions and arrangements connected with the teaching of assigned subjects.
  • Ensure the safe custody and optimum use of equipment normally used during lessons and oversee its regular servicing and maintenance.
  • Ensure the safe custody of the laptop, whiteboard pen, and remote given upon commencement.
  • Participate in school assemblies and parent assemblies as stipulated by the Head of School.
  • Attend termly parent meetings as per policy.
  • Register and monitor the attendance of students under your care and follow up on the same day if a student is absent.
  • Ensure attendance is marked regularly and timely every day.
  • Share in any possible and reasonable way in the effective management, organization, order, and discipline of the school.
  • Nurture a culture where teachers view themselves essentially as facilitators of learning and reflective practitioners.
  • Together with Learning Support Assistants, develop and implement the Individual Educational Programme (IEP) of students with individual educational needs and participate in relevant meetings.
  • Ensure that schemes and forecasts of work carried out in class are handed to the Learning Support Assistant in good time so that necessary adaptations and resources are made for use with students with individual educational needs.
  • Regularly discuss and monitor the work being carried out by the Learning Support Assistant in class.
  • For students with severe learning difficulties and communication problems, ensure that a Contact Book is updated daily with necessary information including parents' signatures.
  • Liaise and collaborate with specialist teachers, resource persons, and other professionals working with SEN students.
  • Ensure the efficient and effective deployment of a Teacher's Assistant, where applicable.
  • Make use of audiovisual technological devices and aides (such as radio aids and projectors) and other adaptations during lessons, using creative and innovative ways to enhance learning in the classroom.
  • Participate in the planning, preparation, and implementation of particular extracurricular activities within the year group in accordance with school policy.
  • Participate in duties allocated by the Head of Department or Head of School.
  • Assist in the planning and organizing of school events and functions.

Skills

Required qualifications, experience & skills

  • Education or teaching degree OR bachelor's degree and teaching qualification/license in relevant subject. Knowledge of the use of ICT in schools to aid teaching and learning.
  • Skilled teacher with solid commitment to teaching and learning and strong subject knowledge in relevant area, teaching A-levels.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to build relationships with students and colleagues and contribute to wider school life.
  • Two years' teaching experience in relevant subject area or age group.
