Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Key purpose
The Carpenter will carry out planned preventive maintenance on doors and windows including associated furniture as well as being part of the reactive maintenance team and will provide first line response to defects and emergencies on carpentry works. He will also provide support to the Handymen and Technical assistant to maintain the facilities in good condition.

Key accountabilities
• Carry out PPM work on doors and opening windows to maintain smooth operation
• Carry out repairs to defective doors, windows, glazing and locking systems
• Provide service to gain emergency access to locked rooms
• Inspection and recording of assets condition
• Assist with minor churn and moves and changes as required
• Carry out repairs to facilities as required
• Carry out minor fabrication works as required
• Ensure compliance with Serco policies and procedures particularly relating to Health and Safety and Work Order Processing
• Support in day to day activities of Estates Service Management
• Shift duty coverage as required

Requirements

Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualifications
• Ability to work on own initiative and without direct supervision
• Good communicator
• Physically fit and conscientious
• Technical certificate in Carpentry/Woodworking or equivalent
• Extensive knowledge of building construction and maintenance techniques
• Fully conversant with all aspects of building construction and maintenance with focus on timber construction and metal carpentry works.
• Customer focussed
• Ability to fabricate items in timber as required
• Understanding of planned and preventative maintenance principles
• Innovative thinker
• Ability to work to tight deadlines in a demanding environment.

Additional / special features of the role
• Maintain up to date knowledge for the safe and efficient performance of all duties.
• Participate in overtime, shift work and/or out of hours working as governed by the necessity to maintain continuity of operation of essential plant and systems.
• Participate in emergency on-call service during non-working hours, weekends and public holidays.
• Work alone with minimum supervision and/or within a team responsible to the Supervisor.
• Participate in the Health, Safety & Risk programs including risk assessment of planned and reactive maintenance work activities.
• Use safe systems of work when working with all plant and equipment and ensure the same with the department and among sub-contractors and third parties.
• Participate in project work including refurbishment of existing building equipment/systems and/or new installations.
• Provide effective communication with management, peers, contractors, subcontractors, project subcontractors.
• Ensure good HSQE and Information security culture is promoted within the department and among peers.
• Carry out other duties as directed by the line management.
• Ensure compliance with the Serco Management System and all relevant business processes, procedures and work instructions to deliver all work with appropriate quality and governance standards
• Ensure security and integrity of all data provided including reporting performance, finance and customer information; reference Serco non-disclosure policy
• To exercise personal duty of care for their own health, safety and welfare and for those affected by their acts or omissions; reference SMS GSOP-HSE1-6 Serco organisational HSE responsibilities
• Ensure compliance with all training requirements of Serco and ensure adherence to these requirements at all times whilst in employment
• Report any accidents, incidents, breaches or potential breaches to appropriate management or the speak up process
