Legal Counsel

Job description / Role

Role Summary:

The commercial counsel will work as part of a broader international legal team and will have a regional remit covering a broad jurisdiction including Turkey, Russia and Africa (the "Region"). Whilst members of the international team are primarily responsible for supporting their individual regions, the team works cohesively as required to ensure that business targets are met.

Essential Responsibilities:

- Working with the regional counsel for the wider region (which also comprises the middle east) to support growth opportunities and initiatives. The transactions typically include the full range of GE engine hardware and associated engine offerings. There is potential to be involved with some corporate work as well (i.e. joint ventures etc.)
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating strategic contracts; coordinating business and functional legal support to ensure that all stakeholders are involved as required (e.g. litigation, labor and employment, intellectual property etc.)
- Acting in a compliance facilitation role in conjunction with the compliance team; supporting the development / maintenance of a strong compliance culture
- Managing outside counsel, when brought in to assist
- Partnering with, advising, influencing and training the business teams on a variety of aspects of legal, regulatory and compliance matters;
- Working with the company secretary on matters of corporate housekeeping
- Provide specialist advice on matters of local law across the Region (including anti-bribery and anti-corruption etc.)
- Some travel (within the region) is highly likely.
- The position will report directly to the regional counsel for the wider region.

Requirements

Qualifications/Requirements:

- English or NY qualification strongly preferred but not essential; ideal candidate will be around the 3-4PQE level. Corporate or asset finance experience would be advantageous but not essential
- Experience at a large (preferably international) law firm or multinational company's legal department is preferred
- Arabic skills would be advantageous but not essential
- The candidate should ideally be based in the Middle East (preferably the UAE) at this time but this is not a strict requirement.

- Ideal candidates must be comfortable running large deals with minimal supervision and independently managing a challenging workload. The role offers a significant amount of responsibility and autonomy.
