Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Network Admin - 12 month FTC

This role will include maintaining the corporate IT network and its operating systems, ensuring availability of IT-infrastructure according to accepted service level agreements, reviewing network performance and quality of service provided by the network and its constituent hardware, software, transmission services and support functions. Additionally this role will also include maintaining and updating all relevant documentation related to the network.

Description

* Implements and tests the network infrastructure as per authorised and approved design and ensures that the network meets the requirements stated in the IT strategy.
* Uses network management systems software to create ad-hoc network models. Includes advising on the communications requirements of installed and planned networked information systems, covering security, characteristics of related hardware and software and targets for performance and quality of service.
* Carries out defined tasks related to planning, installation, upgrade, operation, control and maintenance of local and wide area networks for communication of data, voice, text or images within one or more computer systems. Includes analysing site survey reports and develops specifications of requirements and plans for installation and commissioning of hardware and software.
* Reviews, with concerned parties, network performance and quality of service provided by the network and its constituent hardware, software, transmission services and support functions. Diagnoses and resolves network problems, including negotiation with specialists, other staff or suppliers, as appropriate, and utilising appropriate techniques, tools, methods or standards.
* Timely response to requests for support (making minor system modifications, reconfiguring systems). Includes setting priorities and following up requests in accordance with agreed criteria, investigating minor/medium size problems and other requests for support and determines appropriate actions to take. Takes corrective action, under advice, to improve performance and to avoid problems arising.
* Perform first and second level hardware support activities. Includes investigating, diagnosing, and escalating to the Management for deciding course of action and resolving network problems for users. Tests and verifies hardware and support peripherals to ensure that they meet specifications and requirements.
* Installs /removes network hardware or software components, using supplied installation instructions and tools; follows agreed standards, agreed plans, including where appropriate, those for electrical work. Agrees the timing of the work with those affected, eg users, operations management. Reports details of all hardware items that have been installed and contributes to defining organisations standards of hardware.
* Assists in monitoring utilisation for current and capacity planning for proposed systems, including changes, by performing defined tasks. Includes assisting in investigating, diagnosing and resolving problems, selecting appropriate tools and techniques to fulfil requirements to generate accurate information for measuring, estimating, planning and tuning capacity, as directed.
* Carries out support activities with respect to problem management process. Includes reporting on defect/problem, running simple diagnostic tools to identify issues, resolving simple technical problems, and obtaining diagnostic data to assist in investigating and resolving problems. Matches unresolved incidents against existing problems, known errors and other incidents.

Requirements

* Bachelor's degree in Communications Engineering, Electronics or equivalent
* Strong Cisco networking experience - CCNA, CCNP preferred
* 5-8 years of experience in data communication engineering and control
* Sound knowledge of server, client and network operating systems.
* Sound knowledge of protocol analysers and remote monitoring tools.
* Good understanding of operating systems, security policy and system administration concepts.
* Sound knowledge in the use of chargeback and troubleshooting tools, inter-networking concepts, network topologies and communication protocols.
* Good understanding of the various availability management methods and techniques, eg. Component Failure Impact Analysis (CFIA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), etc.
