Employment: Full Time

Reporting to the Director of Nursing, the Nurse Manager – Child and Maternal Health for Al Jowhara Hospital is responsible for supervising and directing nursing practice, planning and evaluating the care of patients within assigned unit/specialty. Holds accountability for maintaining comprehensive, continuous and quality care for each patient/family at the designated unit. Promotes and restores patient’s health by developing day-to-day management and long-term planning of the patient care area; directing and developing staff; collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary professional staffs; providing physical and psychological support for patients, friends, and families.

Key Outputs:

Directs and supervises nursing staff in provision of nursing care, nursing documentation and ensure the availability of support services which facilitate this care.
- Acts as a resource to subordinates, interpreting philosophy, goals, standards, policies and procedures.
- Supervises and coordinates all patient care on the unit, including communication with physician.
- Coordinates and instruct shift in charge and assigned nurse in providing doctors with the relevant paperwork and information on the patients they are treating.
- Oversees that patients’ files are referred to billing and payment departments and that patients/family are informed.
- Supervises nursing staff assigned to a particular shift and assigns patients to available nursing staff, taking into consideration the patient's condition and the employee's skill level.
- Orders and suggests continuing education or remedial training and classes for unit staff when specific learning needs are identified.
- Empowers staff nurses and support their autonomy in applying evidence based practices at bed side.
- Teach staff and assure the implementation of effective admission/discharge planning in cooperation with admission staff.
- Coordinates the patient care with the other members of the health care team.
- Monitor and ensure that nursing documentation is following SOAP method, organized, compiled and stored as per nursing Medical Record policies and procedures.
- Keeps superiors informed regarding problems or issues in patient care
- Makes frequent rounds in the unit to evaluate and assure that all patients receive quality nursing and medical care.
- Communicates regularly with all subordinates face to face to monitor practice and promote trust.
- Assumes 24-hour responsibility of the unit.
- Ensures effective communication within the unit/department between nursing staff, patient and/or significant others along with inter and intra departmental personnel.

Responsible for the delivery of quality patient care to patients within the unit and assists in the formulation of strategies for promoting standards of practice and multidisciplinary care.
- Provides nursing standards and policies, and procedures regarding patients care to guide subordinates.
- Instructs and assures the implementation of new health care programs, and standards of patient care.
- Acts as staff members and patient advocate.
- Acts as liaison with the medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.
- Serves as resource person to nursing personnel in assessing, planning, implementation and evaluating nursing care provided.
- Provides nursing care to patients on an as needed basis. May administer oxygen, CPR, IVs, or medications.
- Provides leadership that enables professional decision making and effective team working.
- Communicates and describes to subordinates what is expected from them as staff members and as professionals.
- Cooperates and works as an active member of the multidisciplinary team and as a role model for the nursing personnel.
- Monitors compliance to multidisciplinary care guidelines and provides constructive comments to staff to develop and evaluate individualized plan of care.
- Makes daily rounds on patients at frequent intervals during the shift and anticipates, identifies potential/actual problems, and resolution of problems.
- Investigates patient’s reports complaints, problems and concerns and implements any changes required in relation to complaints.
- Plans adequate staffing cover for the unit as per recommended nurse-patient ratios and the unit scope of service and provides a balanced schedule.

Demonstrates knowledge of key business concepts relevant to the healthcare function and is able to balance business needs with patient care priorities.
- Assists in establishing departmental budget that supports organizational goals without sacrificing quality care.
- Selects treatments from among approved options based on individual patient circumstances.
- Conducts training programs in related specialties.
- Evaluates the financial and clinical impact of new technologies or treatments.
- Measures unit performance against established standards; recommends process improvements.
- Gives feedback to DON and nursing quality management staff regarding performance and areas for improvement.
- Monitors staff sickness, lateness and absenteeism.
- Plans staff annual leave to ensure equity and fairness for all staff without compromising operational requirements.
- Identifies strategies in conjunction with assigned DON to cover staffing deficiencies.
- Audits inventory levels and orders and restocks items at the end of each shift
- Conducts monthly unit meetings, nursing management meeting and departmental meetings. All minutes of meeting to be submitted to Nursing Administration by identified deadline.
- Plans and schedules on call and standby staffing needs for the unit.
- Maintains overtime levels within acceptable levels while maintaining safe coverage on the unit and wellbeing of nursing staff.

Leads and supervises the operations of the assigned unit to meet the objectives of the hospital strategic priorities and nursing strategic plan.
- Evaluates the unit work performance and attributes of nursing personnel timely and prepares evaluations or reports and meets all deadlines.
- Maintains comprehensive performance records on all assigned staff.
- Completes annual performance evaluation for staff and submits within established time frames, coaches, mentors, counsels and disciplines staff as required.
- Instructs and orients new staff members and continuously interprets and instructs personnel for higher standards.
- Maintains a dignified professional association with personnel and the public.
- Responsible for timely administrative reports, memos and utilizing various types of electronic information systems.
- Commits self to nursing excellence and possesses strong interpersonal team building and decision making skills.
- Trains nursing staff in ongoing new job responsibilities, Performance Measures, documentation requirements and mandatory training.
- Performs all required duties varying throughout the day to meet the needs of the patients and staffing.
- Orders, or directs ordering of drugs, solutions, and equipment, and maintains records on narcotics.
- Monitors patient care areas and other facilities for cleanliness and readiness.
- Identifies in a timely manner any areas of concern and develops performance improvement plan.
- Acts as a vital link between the nursing management and the staff that delivers care to the patient.
- Ensures all directives from senior management are communicated to unit staff and monitors compliance after implementation.
- Provides all reports, statistics and other information requested by nursing and hospital administration by identified deadlines ensuring reports, statistics and information are accurate.
- Ensures all rooms are clean, prepared and ready for use at the start of each shift

Demonstrates knowledge and understanding that learning is a lifelong process essential to the growth and development of nursing personnel striving to deliver quality patient care.
- Monitors staff compliance with mandatory education requirements and develops performance improvement plan for any identified deficiencies.
- Monitors performance of new employees, ensuring all deadlines for completion of orientation, orientation checklists and competencies have been met.
- Ensures new employees have allocated preceptor and learning opportunities.
- Orders and suggest continuing education or remedial training and classes for unit staff when needed and assures the completeness of the training for the new hires.
- Provides constructive feedback to each employee on a planned basis,including a yearly observation and evaluation.

Evaluates self on all actions and roles and builds constrictive plan to improve and develop skills and knowledge to meet increased job requirements.
- Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance, uniform and dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.
- Plans and completes job duties with minimal supervisory direction, including using appropriate judgment.
- Uses tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations.
- Searches and finds opportunities to develop own skills and knowledge that benefit the job requirements.

- Completes all nursing & hospital requirements/training within the required timeframe.

Able to explain and apply quality improvement methodology and quality management strategies that meet internal and international standards for demonstrating quality outcomes.

- Reviews periodically professional practice in terms of patient safety, competence and ethical care, recommends and applies necessary changes and updates.
- Complies with all Infection control practices, guides and monitors staff to comply with the same.
- Implements, evaluates, and revises plans to meet the unit goals.
- Monitors and report data on unit performance improvement indicators and develop/suggest strategies for improvement.
- Promote a culture of quality patient care and safety improvement and encourage quality improvement activities.
- Assure the implementation of a blame free atmosphere in the unit to improve and encourage variances reporting.
- Encourage staff on peer support and review.
- Implements, evaluates, and revises plans to meet the unit goals.
- Complies with the shared governance concept and assure its implementation with the DON.
- Aids in the implementation of new policies and procedures.
- Meets regularly with nursing administration for feedback and problem solving.
- Observes nursing care and visits patients to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed, and treatment administered in accordance with physician's instructions.
- Investigates and resolves complaints, or refers unusual problems to superior.
- Has awareness of potential health and safety hazards and ways to control them.
- Continually looks for opportunities for service improvement, development and modernization.

Requirements

- Minimum Bachelor of Science in nursing.
- HAAD license
- Valid Nursing Licensure from the Country of Origin upon appointment
- BLS

Relevant Experience
- Clinical and Administrative Practice minimum of 3 years full time post registration nursing practice in NICU and Labour and Delivery
- 5 years at nursing management level in a tertiary hospital.
- Working knowledge of Performance Improvement Process and International Standards.
- Language: Excellent command of English language, Arabic is a plus.
