Job description / Role

The Company (the “Group”) is one of the leading conglomerates in Afghanistan, with operations across a number of countries in Central Asia and the Middle East. The Group is headquartered in Mazar-e-Sherif and in Dubai, and has main business activities across the energy, financial services and construction industries. The Group is looking to employ an experienced power sector professional, who will work with the Group Chairman and Board of Directors to lead and expand the Group’s activities in the power generation sector in Afghanistan.

Key Responsibilities:
- Project managing the development of Afghanistan’s first thermal independent power project (50MW - Phase 1 with future expansion phases planned) being undertaken by the Group near Mazar-e-Sherif in the north of the country.
- Advising the Group Management and leading on all technical aspects of the project development, implementation, construction and operation.
- Participating and advising the Group Management on the selection of equipment, as well as an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) and an O&M (Operations & Maintenance) contractor for the power plant. Working with Group’s external technical / legal advisers to monitor the contractors’ work during construction and operation.
- Interacting and coordinating with all external project stakeholders on various aspects of the project, including all technical aspects during development, construction and operation.
- Supporting the Group in identifying any other power sector opportunities for investment in Afghanistan and beyond.

Requirements

- At least 15 years of design and engineering experience in the power generation sector. Experience of managing power plants is desirable, though not a must.
- Experience of working in emerging markets, preferably across MENA, Africa or South Asia.
- Strong technical skills in development and operations of thermal power generation plants.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of power plant economics and financial/operational KPIs.
- Masters or equivalent degree in related engineering from a reputable university.
- Fluent in English; knowledge of Darri/Farsi will be preferred, but is not a must.
- Frequent travel and stay to Mazar-e-Sherif / Kabul will be required. Willingness to be based in Mazar-e-Sherif, particularly once the project is under construction and operation is a positive. The Group will be responsible of provision of all security and related facilities while in Afghanistan.
