Senior Accountant

Job description / Role

The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing all financial, accounting, and regulatory compliance functions of a General Contracting company in the UAE. The role ensures full adherence to IFRS, Federal Tax Authority (FTA) requirements, UAE VAT law, and the financial and reporting standards of DED and DMT. The position manages financial operations, reporting, budgeting, cost control, and project accounting while coordinating closely with internal departments, auditors, banks, and government authorities. The Senior Accountant also supervises the accounting team and supports management in financial planning and project cash-flow decision-making.

1. Financial Management & Accounting
• Manage all financial transactions, GL, journal entries, trial balance, and bank reconciliations as per IFRS.
• Oversee accounts payable/receivable, payroll, cost accounting, and project budgeting.
• Handle Letters of Credit (LCs), bank guarantees, performance bonds, and retention accounts.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow).
• Oversee progress billings, subcontractor payments, and project cost allocations.
• Review and approve supplier invoices, purchase orders, petty cash, and WPS payroll.

2. Taxation & Regulatory Compliance
• Manage VAT registration, calculation, filing, and reporting in compliance with FTA regulations.
• Prepare VAT returns, ensure full reconciliation of Input/Output VAT, and handle FTA audit requirements.
• Coordinate with DED, DMT, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Ministry of Finance, and Central Bank for financial certifications and renewals.
• Liaise with MOHRE and insurance bodies regarding payroll and compliance reporting.

3. Cost Control & Project Accounting
• Oversee cost allocation, retention, and progress billing for all construction projects.
• Verify project budgets, POs, subcontractor invoices, and claims.
• Prepare cost variance reports and highlight deviations to management.
• Maintain detailed cost ledgers (materials, labor, equipment, overheads).

4. Audit, Reporting & External Coordination
• Coordinate annual/interim audits and prepare all required schedules and documentation.
• Prepare management reports for cash flow, profitability, and financial performance.
• Liaise with banks, auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies to meet statutory requirements.
• Ensure compliance with UAE Commercial Companies Law and DED/DMT classification rules.

5. Team Leadership
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff, assign tasks, and review accuracy of outputs.
• Train team members on accounting standards, VAT requirements, and compliance procedures.
• Conduct periodic reviews to ensure accuracy and performance.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce from an accredited university.
• Equivalency Certificate from the UAE Ministry of Higher Education – mandatory
• Minimum 7 years of professional experience in accounting and finance, including at least 5 years within construction or general contracting companies in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi
• Strong knowledge of IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), UAE VAT Law, and UAE Labor and Commercial Regulations.
• Experience in interaction with FTA (Federal Tax Authority), DED (Department of Economic Development), DMT (Department of Municipalities and Transport), Abu Dhabi Department of Finance, and external auditors.
• Proficiency in ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems such as SAP, Oracle, etc.
• Excellent command of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Advanced English proficiency (verbal and written); Arabic language is an advantage.
