Job Description

We are looking to appoint an outstanding Teacher of EAL for an August 2025 start.

Overview

GEMS FirstPoint School (FPS) opened in 2014 and is positioned in the heart of The Villa community in Dubai. It is a premium British Curriculum School, providing an excellent standard of education to around 2000 students from Nursery (aged 2) to Year 13, with exciting plans to expand facilities further in the coming years. The school has grown rapidly and continues to be popular with families from across Dubai, with over 90 nationalities represented. FPS is housed in state-of-the-art buildings with a separate sports and performing arts centre, swimming pools, theatre, sports hall, dance, drama and music rooms. Our main building contains specialist facilities such as a range of computer labs, food technology kitchen, textiles and design suite, fully equipped Design Technology workshops, science labs and much more. Responsibilities

  • Prepare students for standardized language assessments, including IELTS Academic, ESL and EAL IGCSE.
  • Develop Individual Language Plans (ILPs).
  • Conduct progress meetings with parents and review ILPs to ensure targeted language support.
  • Deliver the required curriculum, demonstrating accurate and up-to-date knowledge of curriculum and subject matter.
  • Plan and deliver quality lessons to motivate students. Create and utilize appropriate materials and the classroom environment to cater for different learning styles.
  • Show written evidence of planning and preparation on request. Establish and maintain records of curriculum and year plans, attendance, teaching resources, assessment plans, etc.
  • Ensure the GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct are followed at all times.
  • Teach students assigned according to their individual needs using appropriate teaching strategies that meet student needs and abilities (e.g., late-entering students, ESL, low academic ability, gifted and talented, etc.).
  • Set and mark work. Assess, record and report on the academic development, progress and attainment of students and use assessment to ensure the curriculum meets the individual student's needs.
  • Display competence in using media and technology in the classroom.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of students and provide guidance to students on educational matters.
  • Communicate with persons outside the school where appropriate (e.g., Ministry of Education officials).
  • Participate in appraisal and Performance Management procedures and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Work alongside colleagues on the preparation and development of teaching materials, resources, courses of study and pastoral arrangements.
  • Participate in, and lead where appropriate, the co-curricular and extra-curricular programmes in the school. Promote good working relationships through active leadership and sharing of ideas, materials and experiences.
  • Monitor and supervise safe and appropriate student behavior. Plan and implement strategies to encourage self-discipline and manage disruptive behavior.
  • Model and encourage cultural awareness and understanding and promote a love of learning.
  • Assist in the planning and organizing of school events and functions (e.g., inter-house competitions, concerts, school plays, prize days, etc.).
  • Communicate and meet with parents regularly, promoting the GEMS philosophy and core values; keep parents regularly informed of students' progress while respecting the confidentiality of student-related information.
  • Initiate effort and energy beyond the typical workday, where the tasks require additional commitment.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as requested by direct and dotted reporting line managers/supervisors.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in TESOL, Linguistics or a related field. A relevant MA in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or a PGCE with an EAL specialization is an advantage.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience teaching EAL/EL learners in an academic setting.
  • Proven experience preparing students for IELTS Academic, ESL and EAL IGCSE assessments.
  • Experience in a British curriculum school is an advantage.
