Job description / Role
The welding supervisor leads a team of welders and is responsible for the management and technical supervision of all welding activities, both aluminothermic and flashbutt welding.
Essential Job Functions
- Leads, plans, coordinates and executes all tasks of the welding team including cutting rail, clipping and un-clipping rail, use of the rail tensor, rail grinding and manual tamping at the welding joint.
- Responsible for the welding and grinding of the track infrastructure, the preparation of preliminary cost estimates and BoQ’s regarding spares, consumables, etc. with and through the use of the Asset Management System and with respect to the Operations JV Asset Management Strategy
- Reviews, initiates, directs and implements welding strategies to ensure the safe passage of rolling stock throughout the rail corridor.
- Ensures maintenance team is fully competent and adequate personnel is available for daily welding and grinding tasks and repairs
- Conducts regular safety inspections and implements corrective actions as required.
- Supports the operation of the Track Maintenance Senior Manager works scheduling and follow-up service by providing the necessary welding resources
- Ensures all activities are performed safely and within relevant requirements and company HSEC and operational standards
- Assists management in developing the maintenance component of the annual budget and manages controllable expenditures in the section
- Engages with other operating disciplines, including planners, to coordinate facility activities
- Represents the Track Maintenance Senior Manager at meetings as directed
Requirements
Academic Qualifications
- High School Certificate or higher
Professional Qualifications
- Welding certificate
- Knowledge of track geometry and distressing techniques
- Knowledge of railway standards
- Full driving license
Experience
- Proven experience in railway industry
- Experience in writing reports
- Experience in heavy haul maintenance desirable
Other skills and abilities
- English as first language or advanced level of written and verbal skill
- Good planning skills
- Analytical skills for problem solving
- Basic skills in MS Office Programs
- Be capable of working in multicultural teams
- Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to motivate and direct employees
