Job description

As a workshop technician in the landing gear workshop, you will be responsible for carrying out maintenance/calibration tasks on Emirates and third-party aircraft components, tools, and equipment in accordance with company procedures and regulations. The job holder works as part of a team under the direction and guidance of the assigned supervisor/engineer within the appropriate trade/cross-trade disciplines for which they have been trained.

In this role you will:

  • Carry out routine component/tools servicing and calibration, maintenance, modification, and/or approved structural repairs compliant to manufacturers' procedures whilst observing all safety procedures.
  • Complete any component/tools maintenance and other tasks as assigned by immediate supervisor/engineers. This will include the ability to obtain and understand Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM), Illustrated Parts Catalogue (IPC), Component Maintenance Manual (CMM), Standard Practice Manual (SPM), Quality Manual ISO/IEC 17025, or other approved documentation required to carry out the task.
  • Assist supervisor/engineers in troubleshooting, defect rectifications, and carrying out modifications while performing instructions contained in the job card.
  • Ensure all work locations are kept clean and maintain excellent housekeeping. Participate and promote creating a safety culture in an effort to minimise accidents and highlight any deficiencies/failures that can lead to such accidents. This includes being aware of and communicating safety shortfalls. Maintain vigilance in ensuring work areas (including the ramp), vehicles, stands, lockers are free of FOD and that toolboxes are regularly audited, maintained, and kept clean.
  • Ensure prompt attendance to all allocated tasks with the intent to reduce turnaround time and avoid operational delays/disruptions. Should be able to communicate any aircraft/component/structural defects found to the supervisor/engineer in an expedient manner and ensure during shift handovers all required information is clearly passed to the staff taking over.
  • Be able to perform testing, verifications, and services to monitor, assist, and support all overhaul/repair/refurbishment/inspection and calibration tasks required as per special procedures and manuals used in the respective workshop.

Qualifications & experience

Degree or Honours (12+3 or equivalent) in engineering in aeronautical subjects, mechanical, avionics, electronic, tech engineering OR Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Licence OR Engineering Apprenticeship.

5+ years of post-qualification experience in the aviation field, out of which a minimum of 2 years should be in a workshop environment, e.g., weight & balance, avionics, cabin, structures or calibration, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel & oil, landing gear, wheel and brake shop.

  • Working knowledge of special procedures used in the wheel & brake shop like plastic media blasting, shot peening, paint touch-up.
  • Should be able to handle motorised equipment like lifters and overhead cranes to be used within the shop floor.
  • Fully conversant with air legislation and legal matters that relate to the operation and maintenance of aircraft to international standards.
  • Machinist workshop specific:
    • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, understand symbols, flags, and general notes, identify part location.
    • Basic knowledge in CAD/CAM such as AutoCAD, Mastercam.
    • Basic knowledge in developing tooling for in-situ machining.
    • Basic knowledge to characterize material machinability, tool holding, tool cutter selection.
    • Hands-on experience in operating CNC milling machines.
    • Knowledge in geometric dimensioning, tolerance, limits, fits, and clearances.
    • Hands-on experience in operating conventional machines such as lathe, milling, and drilling machines.
    • Familiarity with machine shop safety procedures.
  • Welder workshop specific:
    • Hands-on experience in operating TIG welding machine and spot welding machine.
    • Knowledge in TIG welding various metals such as steel, titanium alloys, nickel alloys, and aluminium alloys.
    • Possess knowledge of industrial safety practices.
    • Basic knowledge in assessing weld quality.
    • Ability to determine the requirements to weld various metals based on their material characteristics.
  • Plater workshop specific:
    • Ability to prepare and monitor plating parameters and chemical additions.
    • Knowledge in chemical preparation/mixing of different types of solutions (etching, passivation, anodizing, and chromating).
    • Ability of mixing/preparation for tank plating and effluent treatment plant solutions.
    • Knowledge of tank cadmium plating on aircraft parts.
    • Specialised in electroplating process in sulphuric and chromic acid anodizing on aluminium parts.
    • Specialised in electroplating process in gold plating and nickel plating on metallic and plastic parts.
    • Ability to perform passivation of stainless steel.
