Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Responsibilities:
• To work closely with the Director of Service to provide clinical assessments of student mental health issues, and make clinical recommendations within the limitations of the service, as required. Where necessary identify and proactively seek clinical consultation and review of more complex cases.
• During non-peak periods and out with term time, provide effective short-term ongoing counselling and consultation sessions to students referred to the service, whilst working independently within the University/Service guidelines and procedures.
• To identify and liaise with the Line manager/ Deputy Head of Service/ Service Director regarding any potential situation which may be to the detriment of student welfare and safety.
• Required to attend clinical supervision in line with service Supervision policy, attend scheduled line management one to one meetings, and team meetings in order to ensure competence, fitness to practice, and comply with professional standards.
• To maintain appropriate electronic and written records including Assessment, session notes, records of attendance and contact with other relevant parties. Progress cases as appropriate through CORE NET electronic case file management system.
• To pursue continuous professional development and maintain professional accreditations and memberships, in order to maintain knowledge base, self-awareness, and enhanced skills.
• To participate in service development and delivery in consultation with the Director of Service.
• To assist in clinically related administration, conduct of audits, collection of statistics, development of audit and/or research projects, teaching and project work where required. This includes updating electronic case file records and progressing clinical cases through the service clinical pathway as required, seeking assistance from Line management or administration as required.
• To collaborate with Caps wider multi-disciplinary team and associated colleagues from the College of Social Sciences and Business School, to establish an efficient assessment and referral process within the service. This will involve regularly updating the Director on recommendations for improvement of the assessment process including referral pathways.

Requirements

Desirable:
• Experience of working within a short-term/brief therapy model
• Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles
• Experience working within a University/Higher Education based counselling service or equivalent
• Practical experience of clinical assessments with students
• Experience of risk management of clinical cases
• Experience of working within a busy pressurized environment

Knowledge/Qualifications:
• Accredited Qualification in CBT
• Hold at least membership of an appropriate recognized professional body e.g. UKCP / HCPC / BPS/ BACP/BABCP or equivalent
• Scottish Credit & Qualification Framework Level 8 (HND, SVQ4) or equivalent and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of the ethical frameworks for professional practice, of the above recognized professional body for which the post holder is a member of
• Knowledge and experience of the University/Higher Education counselling service sector
• Knowledge of relevant mental health issues impacting university students
• Understanding of the emotional and developmental aspects of student learning
• Understanding of student stage of personal development and transitions
• A working knowledge of the legal framework in which counselling and psychological therapy sits e.g. Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act and Equality Act

Desirable:
• Educated to Degree level
• Be Accredited or working towards full Accreditation with BACP/BABCP/UKCP or equivalent
• Practical knowledge and understanding of online and telephone counselling

• Proven ability to use initiative and pro-actively seek guidance and consultation on complex cases
• Developed self-awareness
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and university staff (Professional and academic)
• Empathy with the mental health issues that students may experience
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team and across teams
• Ability to work confidentially and cooperatively with a range of academic and other support staff
• Ability to work calmly under pressure using emotional resilience and stamina
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook and other relevant business packages including CORE NET
• Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds
• Ability to sensitively and professionally support students presenting as at risk or in crisis
• Work within the BACP Ethical Framework and follow the BACP UC guidelines of good practice
• To communicate in a professional and sensitive manner clinical and non-clinical advice and information within scope of practice to clients, relatives/carers (where consent has been given), other practitioners and statutory services as appropriate
• Ability to use effective and ethical clinical judgement in the assessment and referral of clients. C16 Ability to prioritize own workload and work under own initiative. C17 Ability to spot opportunities for service development and translate these into practice where appropriate
