In 2002, the Government of Egypt (GoE) enacted Law No. 83 for the year 2002 for establishing Economic Zones of a Special Nature. North-West Gulf of Suez Special Economic Zone (SEZone) which is located in the Suez Governorate in the Sokhna area and adjacent to the Sokhna Port near the southern entrance to the Suez Canal, was established by Presidential Decree no. 35 for the year 2003. It’s considered the first economic zone with a special nature to be established in Egypt.
Law no. 83 for the year 2002 has established the SEZone Authority and mandated the creation of the Main Development Company (MDC) to enable the development of SEZone thus separating the regulatory functions of the SEZone Authority and the development functions of MDC. SEZone is a pioneering endeavor in the industrial expansion and diversification of Egypt. The overall assessment is that SEZone offers the critical foundational elements for successful Special Economic Zones (SEZ) development.
MDC is a shareholding company established under law no. 159 for the year 1981 where SEZone enjoys the share of 51% amongst other reputable shareholders such as Egyptian Chinese Co., Gulf of Suez Development Co., and Misr Bank.
