Description
* UROLOGY, RADIATION THERAPY, GASTROENTEROLOGY AND
* ACUTE MEDICAL UNIT (A-3)

Services covered in this unit include 34 beds which belong to Urology, Radiation Therapy and Gastroenterlogy. In addition, The Acute Medical Unit (7 beds) provides a high level of nursing care to pulmonology and patients with acute medical conditions that require frequent observation and close monitoring. A-3 provides nursing care primarily to adult patients and a selected group of hemodynamically stable pediatric patients, (see Criteria for Admission) with malignant and/or congenitally related diseases who require complex diagnostic workup, major complex surgery or treatment follow up.

The Unit also provides clinical rotation to Nursing Interns, Graduates and Students.

Frequent Procedures/Services/Functions:

Management and care of adult and pediatric patients with Urological conditions:
* Radical Cystectomy with urinary diversion
* Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP)
* Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT)
* Penile Prosthesis implant, and removal of
* Bladder Augmentation
* Radical/Simple/Partial Nephrectomy
* Hypospadias/Epispadias Repair

Management and care of adult and pediatric patient requiring Radiation Therapy with the following conditions:
* Medullablastomas
* Brain Stem Tumors
* Astrocytomas
* Retinoblastomas

Management and care of Adult a patients with Gastrointestinal conditions :
* Esophageal Disorders (Esophagitis, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Esophageal varices)
* Gastroduodenal Disorders (GI bleeding, Gastric Ca, Peptic ulcers, Diverticulitis, Crohn's Disease)
* Liver Diseases (Liver Cirrhosis, encephalopathy, Liver Failure)
* Pancreatic Disorders (Acute and Chronic Pancreatitis)
* Biliary Disorders

Pulmonology patients that require a high level of nursing care and monitoring

Central line management which IV cannulation

Continuous and intermittent pain management: (PCA and epidural).

Management of patients requiring hyperbaric oxygen therapy

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE SERVICE
Adult and pediatric patients presenting with the conditions stated above form the main criteria for admission into the unit. Patients that require frequent observation and close monitoring meet the criteria for entry to the Acute Medical Unit. This includes a 1:2 or 1:3 nurse/patient ratio with a Nursing Hours Per Patient Day of (NHPPD) 10-12.

Requirements

* Registered Nurse with current nursing license from country of origin
* Two years recent acute care nursing experience
