Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Purpose:
- Develops, implements, and manages the center safety program, directs and coordinates the participation of departments within that program; creates or modifies safety policies and updates center Safety Manual as needed.
- Improving safety requires the coordinated efforts of senior leadership, clinical leaders, and frontline staff. The Safety Officer is responsible for working collaboratively with these groups for the purpose of measurably improving safety and reducing patient harm/errors. This requires the systematic implementation of effective, reliable care practices and developing an appropriate safety culture.

Job Responsibilities / Duties:
- Provides leadership and direction to the organizational safety strategy.
- Continuously evaluates and improves the safety program based on internal needs and external requirements and standards.
- The Safety Officer is responsible for monitoring and assessing hazardous and unsafe situations and developing measures to assure personnel safety.
- Conducts an annual assessment of patient risks and working closely with the Patient Safety Team and TMC leadership, develops patient safety goals.
- Ensures the development of surveillance systems to identify and mitigate potential patient harm.
- Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to Leadership Committee.
- Supports/facilitates the implementation of innovation and systems that eliminate patient harm
- Maintains awareness of active and developing situations.
- Ensures the center Safety and Health Plan is prepared and implemented.
- Ensures there are safety messages in each Incident Action Plan
- Facilitates process improvement teams that directly support TMC patient safety goals.
- Supports and encourages submission of safety learning reports from frontline staff.
- Working in collaboration with center leadership, coordinates root cause analysis of safety events and assures implementation of resulting actions plans.
- Collaboration of the Medical Staff, Patient Services, and Human Resources, designs, updates, and implements patient safety education modules for new employee orientation and continuing education
- Provides input into the budget process for expenses related to safety.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

- Graduation of a bachelor's degree or Master’s Degree in Safety. (Preferred Medical Background)
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience in coordinating Healthcare facility management and safety.
- Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Leadership Skills:
- Knowledge of: Principles and practices of evaluating and implementing a comprehensive safety program; training techniques; basic principles of risk management; techniques of accident prevention;
- Ability to: Investigate and evaluate complex safety problems and issues;
- Excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
- Participates in development of safety plan to support grant applications.
- Provides formal orientation and conducts safety performance evaluations for all providers

Communication / Language Skills:
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing Computer literate in electronic mail, word processing, and office management system software
- He/she must be able to provide clear instructions to Medical staff and to listen to any concerns regarding facility management safety issues.
- Active listening, speaking, critical thinking, time management, writing, management of personnel, and judgment and decision making skills

Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to hear staff on the phone and those who are served in person, and speak clearly in order to communicate information to clients and staff.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must have vision which is adequate to read written materials, computer screens, and other clinic documents
- Must have manual dexterity and sensitivity sufficient to perform routine procedures as required
