Job Description

The Department of Food Science, College of Food and Agriculture, United Arab Emirates University seeks applications for an Assistant Professor in Food safety/hygiene, Food microbiology and/or allied discipline. The successful candidate must develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses, including but not limited to, Food safety risk assessment, Epidemiology of Foodborne Illness, HACCP, Food safety management systems, and related courses. The incumbent will supervise undergraduate/graduate students and research trainees.

Research activities of the candidate is expected to focus broadly on Food Hygiene and Food Safety with due consideration on the impact of microbiological and toxicological safety on food quality, food preservation and public health. These aspects are of national and strategic interest within the food safety perspective. Close interaction with stakeholders and industry and collaboration with national/regional organization is expected.

The successful candidate will participate actively in undergraduate and graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis, dissertation and undergraduate research, and publishing research results with students. Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development activities related to teaching and advising. The faculty member will actively seek contract and grant funding to support his/her program.

As per the UAEU mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas ”Research, Teaching, and Service ”regardless of the assignment specified in the position description.

Requirements

Minimum Qualification
PhD in Food safety/hygiene, Food microbiology, Food safety risk analysis, and/or risk perception applied to food safety and epidemiology of foodborne illnesses. The candidate must have documented teaching and research experience or experience as a faculty in the outlined discipline(s). The latter includes mentoring graduate students, and ability to successfully collaborate with research groups internally and externally.

Preferred Qualification
Knowledge of and experience in molecular technologies to detect, identify monitor and trace foodborne pathogenic microorganisms and antimicrobial resistance relevant to public health and food industry is desired.

Teaching, research and student mentoring experience is essential. Administrative experience at the departmental, college or university level will be positively considered but is not essential.

Expected Skills/Rank/Experience
Should have worked as an instructor or faculty member for 3-5 years in higher education institution(s) teaching the discipline post PhD. Must have good understanding of functioning within an academic environment
