Laboratory Technician, Chemistry

Job description / Role

- Manages day-to-day operations of all teaching laboratories, including equipment preparation and maintenance, safety standards/training compliance.
- To provide and sustain an effective learning environment for every student via well prepared laboratory classes, relevant assignments, primary assessment of learning, clear documentation of student progress, and support of academic initiatives.
- Preparation of chemicals ensuring laboratory policies and procedures are adhered to;
- Safe disposal of hazardous chemicals and biological waste;
- Movement of equipment and materials between laboratories;
- Decontamination and cleaning of laboratories.
- Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons, and provide each student clear course expectations, evaluations and timelines through a written syllabus.
- Identify and refer at risk students to specific academic support services.
- Work with each student through their didactic and laboratory skills learning process Skills.
- Prepares and oversees equipment scheduled for use during laboratory teaching sessions.
- Demonstrates care and use of equipment, according to health and safety standards and practices, to teaching staff and students.
- Ensure that all equipment and operations are audited to ensure highest levels of adherence to health and safety protocols.
- Trains teaching staff and students in application and use of new equipment.
- Coordinates with College administration to determine equipment/consumables purchase priorities based on budget allowances, condition of existing equipment, and scheduled laboratory activities.
- Implement any changes to the lab facilities necessary to improve science lab experiment.

Requirements

- Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Masters preferred.
- Minimum 3-9 years of experience in the Medical Laboratory Technician field (generalist preferred).
- 2-3 years teaching experience in a tertiary educational environment.
