This course will help both new and more experienced line managers prepare for and run successful performance appraisals and increase their confidence in supporting, challenging and developing staff.

Course content

Module 1 - The Benefits of Performance Appraisals. The purpose and benefits of the review. Aligning appraisals with organizational success. The role and responsibilities of the appraiser.

Module 2 - Planning for Success. Gathering information supporting evidence and data. Supporting the appraisee to prepare. Drafting an appraisal pan Aligning the appraisal with other organisational policies/procedures/competencies A systematic approach fairness and equality.

Module 3 - The Review Meeting. Establishing rapport and open communication. Questioning and listening skills. Conducing a participative discussion encouraging openness. Overcoming resistance and dealing with uncooperative staff.

Module 4 - Managing Performance. Assessing Performance against agreed objectives and targets. Recognising and maintaining high performance. Identifying the causes of under-performance and managing it confidently empathetically and assertively.

Module 5 - Post Review Follow-up. Performance Appraisal report. Agreeing and recording performance assessment and next steps. Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). Course review and personal action planning.
